BERKELEY CITY COLLEGE

Career Education Pathway Mapping

In 2021, FFG partnered with the Foundation for California Community Colleges to create asset inventories of Berkeley City College’s Career Education Pathways. To emphasize community-wide collaboration, we began by creating seven cross-functional mapping teams made up of BCC faculty, counselors, administrators, and FFG facilitators. Next we facilitated virtual working meetings, where mapping teams utilized our evidence-based processes to create asset inventories – a practice that helps us to identify a community’s existing strengths, and areas ready for improvement.

In a second round of working meetings, we introduced the mapping teams to a new process for evaluating and capturing current pathways, which helped BCC to identify gaps, problems, or inconsistencies within individual pathways – and make improvements. Then we captured the final pathways from all teams, and provided BCC with easy-to-update versions for future revisions.

“This visual [pathway map] is amazing. Big “phew” that we were not asked to map all this out … it was so helpful to have it set up already, so we could [just] dive into providing any light feedback.”

“[These meetings] helped the department reflect on sequencing – as [we went] back in again, I went – “oh, we have gaps that we need to fix,” ... so we’ll be meeting with epic games (unreal!) and hopefully partnering up on some curriculum development.”

By the end of Phase 1, we had:

  1. co-created seven career education pathway inventories in their entirety;

  2. provided BCC with a Career Education Pathway Map Template and Presentation Format for future mapping sessions – empowering them to continue to revise or develop pathways internally; and

  3. developed individualized Action Plans for each represented department as they continue developing and disseminating these new resources – complete with unique Project Dashboards for tracking their progress.

We also provided BCC with shareable Asset Inventories and Key Findings – resources that captured  all the best practices and opportunities we encountered in Phase 1.

Over a six month period draft maps were continually developed and worked on. This is one example of the evolution of a map from the initial draft. These maps are for internal purposes or meant to be interpreted with the guidance of a counselor or faculty advisor.
